DISD Board Trustees Schedule Redistricting Public Hearing
Map Viewing Begins at 6 p.m., Public Comment Starts at 7 p.m.
DALLAS–The Dallas Independent School District Board of Trustees has scheduled a Redistricting Public Hearing for 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24, in the auditorium of the Administration Building, 3700 Ross Avenue (MapscoŽ key 45H).
The districtwide public hearing is just one of several that have been held for public comment on the redistricting process, said Ken Zornes, board president. "The trustees want to offer the public every opportunity to provide input," he said. "The public hearings have allowed the board to keep the public informed about legal requirements of redistricting and have given the public the chance to provide the board with information and community concerns."
Starting at 6 p.m., maps will be posted in the auditorium for the public to view. At 7 p.m., the board will convene to hear public comment about the proposed maps that are being considered for adoption. Two board members are hosting public forums at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, in their communities. Lois Parrott, trustee for District 3, has scheduled a redistricting public forum in the auditorium at Alex Sanger Elementary, 8410 San Leandro Drive (Mapsco key 37Z). The other public forum has been scheduled by Kathleen Leos, District 8 trustee. This forum will be at North Dallas High School, 3120 N. Haskell Avenue (Mapsco 43L).
The board initiated the process of redrawing district lines to conform to the results of the 2000 Census. This measure conforms with the U.S. Constitution which requires approximately equal populations in election districts of representative officials such as legislators, city council members, county commissioner and school trustees.
During the board's five-months redistricting process, it has held five districtwide public hearings. In addition, there have been at least 10 called board meetings dealing with redistricting. At all of these meetings, the board accepted public comments during the delegation period.
The trustees have scheduled another Called Board Meeting for 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, for additional discussion between board members and their consultant firm.
