DISD Schoolchildren Reach Out to Victims of the National Tragedy
DALLAS–From elementary schools to high schools, students and staff across the Dallas Independent School District are participating in activities to show support and express concerns about Americans who were attacked by terrorists Tuesday, Sept. 11. Some of those activities include:
Friday, Sept. 14
- North Dallas High School, 11 a.m., Thanksgiving Square Downtown Dallas
Calling for peace, tolerance and understanding among all people, students from the 1st International School of the United States will address the tragedy that hit the nation earlier this week. Attending the peace rally will be Dallas schoolchildren who came to the United States as immigrants. North Dallas High School students work, study and befriend others from all over the world.
- W. H. Gaston Middle School, 9565 Mercer Drive
At 8 a.m. Friday morning, students and staff met at the flagpole for special prayer for the victims and families. Also, the middle school student council is sponsoring a money collection for the Red Cross Relief Fund.
- Seagoville Elementary School, 304 N. Kaufman Street, Mapsco 80 A-F
The Parent-Teacher Association is sponsoring Pennies for the Pentagon. Students and parents are donating pennies in jars throughout the school for the coin collection drive.
- San Jacinto Elementary School, 7900 Hume Drive, Mapsco 37Z
The fourth graders are writing letters to the children of the New York victims to express their support and sympathy.
Friday-Wednesday, Sept. 14-19
- Nathaniel Hawthorne Elementary School, 7800 Umphress Road, Mapsco 58G
Students are sponsoring a schoolwide coin collection to help the victims and their families, especially the children.
- Ascher Silberstein Elementary School, 5940 Hollis Avenue, Mapsco 47U
Students are conducting a coin collection for the victims of the tragedy.
Friday-Saturday, Sept. 14-22
- Thomas Tolbert Elementary School, 4000 Blue Ridge Road, Mapsco 63A
Starting Friday, Sept. 14, red, white and blue ribbons will be displayed in honor and remembrance of the victims at the World Trade Center Towers, Pentagon and those who died in the airplanes. Students and staff are encouraged to donate money for a relief fund for the families affected by the national tragedy.
Monday, Sept. 17
- Raśl Quintanilla Middle School, 2700 Remond, Mapsco 43V
Students plan to collect bottled water and canned food for the victims' families. Other activities include writing letters and cards to the victims' families.
- Edison Runyon Academy, 10750 Cradlerock, 59H
Students have written letters to show support to President George W. Bush. They are wearing red bracelets in remembrance of the victims. In addition, the sixth graders are raising money for the Red Cross Relief Fund. The students are members of Student Making Abstinence Real Today. The student organization's goal is to raise at least $1,000.

Kindergarten students are creating pictures to honor all New York firefighters, police officers, doctors, nurses and sanitation employees. These pictures will be delivered to Mayor Ron Kirk so that he may give them to the mayor of New York. First graders are preparing cards of gratitude for the New York mayor, too.
At 8:15 a.m. on Monday, students, staff and parents will gather in the front parking lot to show their support and appreciation to all firefighters. Fire Station #5 firefighters will be the school's guests. The firefighters will be representing all the firefighters from New York and around the nation. Red, white and blue ribbons will be tied along the fence as a symbol of unity.
Monday-Wednesday, Sept. 17-19
- B. H. Macon Elepentary School, 650 Holcomb Road, Mapsco 58R
Sixth and fifth grade students will be making cards for the firefighters in New York while first through fourth graders will make cards for the police officers.
Monday, Oct. 8
- W.T. White High School, 4505 Ridgeside Drive, Mapsco 14Y
The students will participate in a blood drive. Also, all of the spirit groups on campus are collecting money for the Red Cross Relief Fund.
