DALLAS—Students in the Dallas Independent School District have planned events in observance of National Crime Prevention Month and Red Ribbon Week, October 21-27. Both observances are highlighted in district schools and students develop activities to promote safe and drug free communities.

• National Crime Prevention Month is a call for action for citizens to combat crime and reduce the fear of crime in their neighborhoods. Students at Hogg Elementary, 1144 N. Madison, will participate in gun safety demonstrations and safety presentations by the American Red Cross at 9:15 and 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, October 17. On Tuesday, October 30, Fire Chief Roland Gomez will visit Burnet Elementary to give students tips on what to do when left home alone. The school is located at 3200 Kinkaid. Edison Hernandez Academy students will participate in an assembly on "How To Stay Crime Free," Tuesday, October 23, at 2 p.m.

• Red Ribbon Week is a national event honoring Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, a drug enforcement administration agent who was killed in 1985 by drug traffickers. Events nationwide are being planned to honor him and to invite students to live healthy, drug-free and violence-free lifestyles.

On Monday, October 22, starting at 9 a.m., students at Arlington Park Elementary, 5606 Wayside, will sign "red brick pledges" against drugs and use them to build a "wall" in the school cafeteria. Also on Monday, at 8:30 a.m., L. O. Donald Elementary students will decorate the school and outside fence with red ribbons and balloons. The school is located at 1218 Phinney Ave. On Tuesday, October 23, at 9 a.m. Dallas Police Officer Julie Cassidy will bring her police dog to Hexter Elementary, 9720 Waterview, to demonstrate students how the dog is used to sniff out drugs.
