Students Donate $68,177.87 To American Red Cross, Others

DALLAS–Since September 11, Dallas Independent School District students have put their classroom lessons into action. As of October 31, they have raised $68,177.87 to show their American spirit and support to the families of the victims of the national tragedy.

Even before the September 11 tragedy, Dallas schoolchildren were learning character education in their classrooms. As a part of the everyday curriculum, students learn how to be good and caring citizens. On character education, Superintendent Mike Moses said: "We are trying to build good citizens for Dallas. We are trying to build good citizens for Texas. We are teaching our students to be good citizens for America."

From elementary to secondary, 83 schools have participated in some type of fundraiser in which most of the money has been earmarked for the American Red Cross. After all of the coins and small bills were collected, Hillcrest High raised the most money with $5,000. Students at Seagoville High collected $4,936; L.O. Donald Elementary students raised $3,599.12; at Herbert Marcus Elementary, they collected $3,081.77; and Bryan Adams High students collected $3,000.

A complete list of the schools that participated in a fundraiser resulting from the September 11 tragedy is attached.

Editor's note: Contact the DISD Press Office at (972) 925-3906 for a list of schools that are planning activities to raise money for the America's Fund for Afghan Children. The kindergarten students at Harrell Budd Elementary have already raised $537 for President George W. Bush's campaign to provide food and medicine for the children of Afghanistan.
