DISD Receives Letter From FBI

29 Nov 2001

All Investigations Into Past Corruption Have Been Concluded

DALLAS-During the Superintendent's Report made at the Dallas Independent School District Board of Trustee's meeting Thursday evening, Superintendent Mike Moses released a copy of a letter from the FBI announcing that a task force investigating allegations of criminal conduct within the district has concluded and has been disbanded.

The FBI also recommended the district continue its efforts to comply with the 193 recommendations made in an audit by Texas Comptroller Carole Keeton Rylander in June.

Board President Ken Zornes said the announcement lifts a "dark cloud of the past" from over the DISD.

"This announcement sheds a new light on the district and lifts a dark cloud of the past," Zornes said. "The board welcomes this information as it seeks to build further confidence in the district."

Moses said this is another step in the process of regaining the public's trust in the district.

"We look at this as another step that we needed to take to sustain or in some cases regain the trust and credibility of our community. Stewardship is something we take very seriously in this district, and we are going to continue to be responsible even after this announcement from the FBI," Moses said.

"We seek to justify the confidence of the Dallas citizenry about the work we are doing to make the district better because we feel that if we have better schools, we have a better Dallas."

In the letter Dallas Special Agent-In-Charge, Danny Defenbaugh, writes: "The Federal Bureau of Investigation task force investigating allegations of criminal conduct within the DISD has concluded its business, and the task force has been disbanded."

"The current DISD Administration has made great strides in reforming the financial management and business practices of the school district. We stress to you the need for continued vigilance in this regard."
