Election Date Set For January 19 with Early Voting Until January 15
DALLAS–The Dallas Independent School District has two propositions on the ballot for the January 19 election. Early voting ends January 15.
With Proposition 1, DISD is asking voters to authorize the issuance of $1.366 billion in bonds to pay for capital construction and improvement of facilities. Almost 30 percent or $437 million will be used for new school construction or facilities. Proposed new school construction includes money for 16 elementary schools, three middle schools and one high school. Another $414 million is for the essential renovations or maintenance projects. Those include money for roofing replacements, plumbing, mechanical, electrical and technology upgrades.
Proposition 2 calls for the issuance of $38.7 million bonds for refunding all or any portion of the district's presently outstanding debt obligations currently paid from the maintenance tax and the levying of a tax in payment of bonds. State law caps taxes at $1.50 per $100 for day-to-day expenditures.
"The approval of this proposition allows the district more flexibility under the $1.50 tax cap," said Larry Groppel, Deputy Superintendent–Business Services. "Proposition 2 shifts $38.7 million in district debt to make room under the maintenance and operating portion of the tax rates."
