98 Students Graduate Through DISD Dropout Prevention Program
DALLAS–About 100 students will receive diplomas at 7:30 tonight, January 24, after completing graduation requirements through the DISD Campus Learning Communities program. The graduation ceremony will be held in the auditorium at Justin Kimball High School, 3606 S. Westmoreland Road. The Campus Learning Communities initiative targets students who have dropped out, are at risk of dropping out, are overage ninth graders or need a nontraditional learning environment. Last year, 529 students became eligible for graduation by participating in the dropout prevention program. The program currently includes two Central Learning Communities–one at Barbara Manns High School and the other at the Metropolitan Educational Center–and 19 Campus Learning Communities located at high school campuses throughout the district. The nontraditional environment offers students flexible hours with morning, afternoon and night schedules; a self-paced curriculum; computer assisted instruction; accelerated course credit recovery; counseling and career training.
