Information To Be Provided in English and Spanish
DALLAS—Teachers know that preparing students for the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills is not an easy task. Now the Dallas Independent School District has enlisted the help of parents as study partners for their children. The Parent Information Fair to be held at four district schools Saturday, February 9, from 8 a.m. until noon, will provide easy tips on how to help children study for each portion of the test. Free child care will be provided as well as refreshments.
"Often times parents feel frustrated because they are not able to help their children study for tests, including the TAAS," said Louann Dobbs, executive director, School Leadership and Operations. "The fair will provide an opportunity for parents and schools to exchange information, share questions and concerns, explore available resources, and expand the support for student learning and successes."
Fair participants will receive sample copies of TAAS questions and study tips they can share with their children. One of the sessions, "Understanding Student Record Card," aims to help parents make sense of the scores and how to track their children's progress and academic development. The writing portion of TAAS for elementary students will be offered Feb. 19; the math portion on April 16 and reading on April 17. The fairs will be held at four central locations for parents whose children attend the following schools:
o David Burnet Elementary, 3200 Kinkaid Dr., Burnet, Earhart, Marcus, Saldivar and Vickery Meadows.
o Nathaniel Hawthorne Elementary, 7800 Umphress Rd., Hawthorne, J. Q. Adams, Blair, Cuellar, Florence, Ireland, Moseley, Runyon, Seagoville Middle School, Seagoville High School and Titche.
o Sam Houston Elementary School, 2827 Throckmorton, Adamson High School, City Park, Cochran, Henderson, Lakewood, Medrano, Miller, Oliver, Terry, and Zaragoza.
