3,000 Students Compete in 'A Celebration for Academic Excellence'
DALLAS–More than 3,000 Dallas Independent School District elementary students in Oak Cliff will compete Saturday, Feb. 23 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in one of three academic fairs. The academic competitions will be held at W.H. Adamson, Moisés E. Molina and Sunset high schools. The first "A Celebration for Academic Excellence" academic fair in Area 6 was held at Sunset High School in 1996.
Accompanied by their parents, 3,500 first- through sixth-grade students from 23 schools in the district's Area 6 will compete in at least one and up to three academic events, including art, math, poetry, spelling, and geography. About 1,400 medals, ribbons and trophies will be awarded to the winners.
"These fairs create a real sense of community with parents serving as escorts and offering support to their youngsters during the events and with teachers and administrators from all schools organizing events, serving as judges, and directing student recognition activities," said Oscar Rodriguez, DISD Area 6 superintendent.
