Students To Present $23,605 To Local Charities

Who: More than 300 students from 33 Dallas Independent School District schools

General Superintendent Mike Moses

Representatives from more than 25 local non-profit organizations and charities

Louise Gartner, Dallas philanthropist

What: A Common Cents news conference to announce the recipients of about $23,605 collected during the student-led coin collection campaign.

When: 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, February 27, 2002

DISD Administration Building auditorium, 3700 Ross Avenue

Why: The Common Cents project allows students to raise money for charity and non-profit organizations. It encourages good citizenship and social responsibility among young people.

How: Common Cents barrels were located on the participating campuses. Students raised the money by collecting pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters. After the money was counted, a roundtable of students selected which local agencies were to receive the funds based on proposals submitted in January.

Note to the Editor:

Share the students' philanthropic spirit of giving with your audience. Come see that behind the oversized checks the students will present to the charities are caring and giving children who made Common Cents work to make a difference in their community.
