Pilot Famous From April 2001 Incident With Chinese Fighter To Visit DISD
DALLAS—U.S. Navy Lt. Shane Osborn had quite a year in 2001.
He came to fame for saving the lives of the 24-member crew of his naval surveillance aircraft and landing his crippled plane after a mid-air collision with a Chinese fighter. Osborn and his crew held the attention of the world for 12 days while the Chinese government held them for landing in their country.
On Friday, Osborn will be at Skyline High School in Dallas to speak to JROTC aeronautics, and other cluster students about his ordeal, relay some real-life experiences, and talk about the importance of aeronautic careers and getting a good education.
Skyline Principal Claudia Rodriguez said there is great excitement and enthusiasm of the students over the visit of the internationally famous military figure.
"There is no question this will be an inspirational and uplifting patriotic event that will help confirm in the minds of our students the importance of getting a good education and the potential doors a solid education can open," Rodriguez said. "Lt. Osborn is living proof that the 'sky's the limit,' which is also our school motto for the 2001-02 school year."
Osborn is scheduled to speak at Skyline in the auditorium, located at 7777 Forney Road, at 10:45 a.m. He also is scheduled to have lunch with some of the students and instructors in the culinary arts cluster.
