Nine Dallas Teachers Selected for 'Going Above and Beyond the Call of Duty'
DALLAS—The Rotary Club of Dallas has named three finalists in three categories for the organization's annual Outstanding Teacher Awards for Service Above Self, with one winner in each category being announced during a luncheon April 17.
The awards honor Dallas Independent School District teachers who devote significant time beyond the regular school day to improve instruction for Dallas children and benefit their communities. The six finalists will receive $250 from the Rotary Club, and the three winners will each receive $2,000.
The event will be held at noon in the Grand Hall which is located at Union Station, 300 Reunion Blvd. DISD Chief of Staff Carol Francois will join Rotary members in presenting the awards at the April 17 luncheon.
The finalists in the elementary category are: Sue Albee, fifth-grade teacher at Lida Hooe Elementary School; Eileen Bowles, sixth-grade mathematics teacher at Edwin J. Kiest Elementary School; and Alana Sloan, third-grade teacher at L.L. Hotchkiss Elementary School.
Middle school finalists are: Charles Bowens, special education teacher at W.E. Greiner Middle School; Jeannette Glass, eighth-grade career investigation teacher at D.A. Hulcy Middle School; and Cheryl Lever, physical education teacher at Benjamin Franklin Middle School.
Finalists at the high school level are: Karen R. Butler, mathematics/AP teacher at H. Grady Spruce High School; Sandra Elise Schulz, art teacher at Thomas Jefferson High School; and Tara Smith, science teacher at Franklin D. Roosevelt High School.
A committee appointed by the Rotary Club of Dallas selected the finalists and winners from applications submitted by each school in the district.
The Rotary Club of Dallas presented the first Service Above Self Awards to Dallas Independent School District teachers in 1992.
