DISD Seniors Explore Job Opportunities
DALLAS–Dallas Independent School District seniors get a chance to explore job opportunities after high school graduation at the School-to-Work Job Fair scheduled from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, April 20, at Union Station, located at 400 S. Houston Street.
Sponsored by the DISD Graduate Placement Center, the job fair provides seniors with a "jump-start" to obtain entry level jobs for full- or part-time employment, said Barbara Biebuyck, DISD job placement specialist.
"Graduates today are faced with the challenge of struggling to find an entry level job because of the economy," Biebuyck said. "I encourage all graduating seniors to take advantage of the opportunity to attend the job fair to help them find employment."
Starting at 9 a.m., several seminars are planned to give students tips and strategies to help their quest for employment. The seminar topics include: Resume Writing, Interviewing Techniques, Networking, Dressing for Success and Financial Planning.
About 65 local companies will be on hand to take applications and interview the graduating seniors. Along with the businesses, community colleges, universities and technical schools will have booths set up to promote higher education.
The Graduate Placement Center will award two $1,000 scholarships at the job fair. Also, the high school with the largest percentage of its graduating class attending the job fair will receive a computer.
This is the eighth year the School-to-Work Job Fair for graduating seniors has been organized by the Graduate Placement Center. Located at 5000 South Malcolm X Boulevard in Room 112, the center offers a variety of other job search services to DISD graduates. Some free services provided by the center include resume preparation, career guidance, ongoing job search assistance and interviewing skills and coaching.
Last year, Biebuyck said that 10 out 12 district graduates who registered with the center found employment. For information about the School-to-Work Job Fair or the Graduate Placement Center, contact Barbara Biebuyck (Bie-Buck) at (972) 749-2580.
