Gwyn Shea Encourages DISD Graduating Seniors To Get Involved in Electoral Process

DALLAS–Secretary of State Gwyn Shea will speak to Dallas Independent School District students about the importance of voting at 2 p.m. Friday, April 26 at W.T. White High School.

Secretary Shea will address about 150 seniors in the school's media center about getting involved in the electoral process. Also, she plans to hand-deliver graduation cards containing a voter registration application to encourage eligible seniors to register. W.T. White is located at 4505 Ridgeside Road.

As part of a statewide public education effort, Secretary Shea is visiting students in 22 cities to spread the word about the importance of exercising their civic duty.

The graduation cards were mailed to 1,820 high school campuses across the state to approximately 226,000 graduating seniors. This concentrated effort stems from decreasing voter turnouts in both primary and general elections, especially among our youth, Secretary Shea said.

"As these students graduate and enlarge their role as citizens--either in the work environment, or by furthering their education --voters will continue to shape the kind of world that they live in," she said.

DISD participates in Project V.O.T.E. (Voters of Tomorrow through Education), a program designed by the Office of the Secretary of State. Project V.O.T.E. is a pre-k through 12th grade curriculum that teaches students about the electoral and legislative processes.
