Almost 25,000 lunches and snacks will be prepared for distribution
DALLAS--From June 3 through August 9, the Dallas Independent School District's Food & Child Nutrition Services Department, in conjunction with the Texas Department of Human Services, will sponsor the 2002 Summer Food Service Program to ensure that many Dallas youth will not go without proper nutrition.
Eligible youngsters ages one to 18 can receive a free lunch and snack each day at more than 100 Dallas-area sites, including churches, parks, recreation centers, and schools throughout Dallas.
Free breakfast and lunch will be provided to elementary students at the school where they are enrolled in a summer school program. Breakfast and lunch will be served four days a week, Monday through Thursday. The district's Summer School 2001-2002 program begins June 4 and continues through June 27.
"With the schools being closed for the summer, this program allows children to have access to proper nutrition and stay healthy," said Deborah Owens, director of compliance, Food and Child Nutrition Services Department.
Almost 25,000 lunches and snacks will be prepared for distribution from food preparation sites at A. Maceo Smith High School, Eladio Martinez Elementary, and Greiner Middle School. The program has also provided summer employment for more than 425 food service employees throughout the district, who previously were unemployed during the summer months.
