Edison Schools' Key Dates Listed<//p>
Dallas—Classes for the Dallas Independent School District and Edison Schools begin Monday, Aug. 26, with an expected total enrollment of 166,000 students.
Gabe Allen Charter School's first day of school is August 19.
To ease the confusion of the first days of classes, the district has set up a parent hotline to address school-related concerns. Parents should call 972-925-5437 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 26-27 to receive information about bus routes, applications for free and reduced-lunch, immunization requirements, school locations, hours of operation and other school-related concerns. From Aug. 28-30, the hotline will operate from 7:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
For almost 7,200 prekindergarten students expected to enroll this year, classes begin a week later on Sept. 3. To meet the growing demand for prekindergarten instruction, the district has scheduled 135 full-day classes and 105 half-day classes. The half-day morning classes are from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.; afternoon classes are from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The full-day pre-kindergarten program is from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
• Parent/teacher conferences have been scheduled from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., Oct. 21 for high schools; Oct. 22 for elementary schools, and Oct. 24 for middle schools. Spring semester conferences are March 10 for high schools; March 11 for elementary schools, and March 13 for middle schools.
• School hours have not changed for the upcoming school year. The district will operate on the following schedule, but will remain open longer for afternoon programs as needed. Elementary School—8 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Middle Schools—8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and High School—8:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Skyline Center and Yvonne Ewell Townview Center hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
• Student report cards will be issued Oct. 21, Dec. 9, Jan. 27, March 24, May 5 and June 5. The last day of instruction is June 5.
Gabe Allen Charter School
• The school year at Gabe Allen Elementary, a charter school, begins Aug. 19—a week earlier than the rest of the district schools. Last day of classes for students is June 18. Parent conferences will be held Oct. 10 and Jan.30 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
In addition, several breaks have been incorporated in the calendar including fall intersession Nov. 18-26 and spring intersession March 10-14 and March 24-28. Spring break is March 17-21.
Edison Schools
• Classes at the district's seven Edison Schools—Blair, Henderson, Hernandez, Maple Lawn, Medrano, Runyon and Titche—begin Aug. 26 and conclude June 30. Hours of operation at these schools are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. for grades K-2; and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for grades 3-6.
Under the Edison plan, instructional grading periods are divided in quarters. First quarter is Aug. 26-Nov. 8; second quarter is Nov. 11-Jan. 31; third quarter is Feb. 3-April 17 and fourth quarter is April 21-June 30.
Parent conferences are from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Nov. 21-22; Feb. 13-14; April 24-24 and June 26-27. Spring break is March 17-21.
