DISD Schoolchildren Remember National Tragedy with Tributes

DALLAS – From elementary schools to high schools, students and staff across the Dallas Independent School District are participating in activities to show support to heroes and tribute to the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 national tragedy.

Schools will perform patriotic songs, release balloons, have flag ceremonies and recite the Pledge of Allegiance. Others will have a moment of silence, recognize police officers and firefighters. The attire for the day will be the patriotic colors of red, white and blue.

At Harry Stone Montessori school students are building two eight-foot replicas of the World Trade Center towers and name them the Twin Towers of Peace. Harrell Budd Elementary will coordinate their events with the American Character Counts Week that falls during the week of Sept. 11.

Students at Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts are collecting donations for 9/11 orphans. Principal Kenn Franklin said that the student council decided on this task to show sympathy, compassion and also as a way to express their feelings in a tangible way.

Last year after the tragedy, students across the district collected more than $68,000 in donations with most of it going to the American Red Cross Relief Fund.

Also, a Sept. 11 observance will be held for employees of the DISD at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 3700 Ross Avenue. Superintendent Mike Moses will welcome students from North Dallas High School and Seagoville High School who have been selected to participate in the activities at the administration building.
