Walnut Hill Elementary and IBM Introduce Parents to Technology

3 Oct 2002

Superintendent Scheduled To Visit La Familia Technology Night

DALLAS—Superintendent Mike Moses will join Principal Jo Anne Hughes and IBM volunteers Wednesday, Oct. 9, for La Familia Technology Night at Walnut Hill Elementary School, 10115 Midway Road.

The event begins at 5:30 p.m. with a community dinner. At 6 p.m., parents become students as they go to one of several computer labs, and Moses is scheduled to greet them at 6:45 p.m.<./p>

Part of a series of workshops designed to help increase computer literacy and promote technology-related education among Hispanic families, the event pairs parents with IBM volunteers. The bilingual classes include basic computer training, discussions of technology careers and examples of how to conduct Internet searches for information.

The evening concludes with a presentation ceremony when all parents will receive certificates and several will receive free computers.

"This is the second year for this wonderful event with our education partner, IBM. Last year, of the parents participating, only two had ever touched a computer previously," said Hughes. "Soon everyone in the class was sending and receiving e-mail from teachers and visiting all kinds of websites to look up information."

Many parents continue to practice what they learned, communicating via e-mail with family and downloading information from government agencies and libraries. IBM will host a similar activity at Eladio Martinez Learning Center Tuesday, Oct. 8.
