DISD Students Observe Red Ribbon Week, Oct. 23-31

23 Oct 2002

Weeklong Activities Serve as Reminder of the

Dangers of Alcohol, Drug Abuse

DALLAS—Students across the Dallas Independent School District are participating in activities as a reminder of alcohol and drug awareness during Red Ribbon Week from Oct. 23-31 by wearing red to school, having parades and symphonic assemblies, writing essays and making posters.

The red ribbon was adopted as a symbol by a number of coalitions of parents concerned about the destruction caused by alcohol and drug abuse. The red ribbon movement has become a national campaign in honor of Enrique Camarena, an agent with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration who was kidnapped and killed while investigating drug traffickers.

More than 60 DISD schools have planned activities in recognition of drug awareness week. Some of those activities are listed below.

John W. Carpenter Elementary School will have weeklong activities that include a visit from McGruff and Reddi Fox on Thursday, Oct. 31. S.S. Conner Elementary has scheduled a parade led by a fire truck, the drill team, drum corp and students and teachers on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 9 a.m.

Martin Weiss Elementary will host a round-up rally at the end of Red Ribbon Week on Wednesday, Oct. 30, at 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. to summarize or extend the guidance program at their school. Mt. Auburn Elementary will also receive a visit from McGruff who will speak at their assembly on Friday, Oct. 25 at 12.45 p.m.
