27 Years of Educational Excellence Continues

DISD Magnet School Recruiting and Selection Process Begins

DALLAS—Students interested in enrolling in one of the magnet, vanguard or academy programs offered by the Dallas Independent School District should attend the magnet school information fair scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, at the Yvonne Ewell Townview Center, 1201 East 8th Street.

Representatives from 23 magnet (high school), academy (middle school) and vanguard (elementary) programs, as well as the career technology program from James Madison High School and Skyline Career Development Center will be present to assist students and parents in preparing the application form and portfolio required for admission consideration.

"One of the unique aspects of the magnet school concept is that students enjoy an opportunity to discover their talents, and they are able to develop those talents in a very challenging environment," said Carolyn Bailey, area superintendent. "The magnet program allows students to receive a comprehensive educational foundation, but they also will be ahead of the curve in a career field by the time they graduate from high school."

More than 6,000 students every year are selected to study a specialized and focused, career-oriented curriculum. These areas range from dentistry to forensic science, banking to law, social services, computer engineering, and the arts.

"We are working very hard to ensure that all populations in Dallas are provided information about the programs and have ample opportunity to apply," said Bailey.

Magnet school information teams have already made presentations to eighth graders in the district about the upcoming recruiting season. Additionally, letters have been sent to the parents of third, sixth and eighth grade students informing them about the fair.

The magnet school concept, now in its 27th year of existence in the DISD, has expanded from four programs in 1976 to 23 magnet, academy and vanguard programs including the career and technology program at Madison and Skyline.

Each year these schools have several hundred students recognized locally, nationally and internationally for their accomplishments and achievements. Nearly all magnet campuses are cited for educational excellence, record attendance and overall student achievement. Teachers and administrators also are lauded for their initiative in creating a challenging learning environment.

The final date to file an application for any of the schools in the 2003-2004 school year is May 1.
