DISD School Calendar for 2003-2004 School Year Approved

20 Dec 2002

Students to Report to School August 18

DALLAS–The Dallas Independent School District Board of Trustees at its Dec. 19 meeting approved the school calendar for year 2003-2004.

The district start of August 18 complies with the Texas law passed in 2001 which states that Texas schools can begin classes no earlier than the week in which Aug. 21 falls unless a waiver is granted.

"The district understands the benefits of adopting a calendar for the upcoming year early," said Superintendent Mike Moses. "Now that the 2003-2004 calendar has been adopted by the trustees, parents can begin making summer plans for their children. Plus, the calendar is helpful for those teachers who plan to take classes or attend conferences during the summer months."

The calendar dates listed apply to schools that follow the traditional school calendar.

• August 18 Classes Start

• September 1 Labor Day Holiday

• October 6, 7, 9 Parent Conferences

• October 10 Elementary Fair Day

• October 17 Secondary Fair Day

• November 26-28 Thanksgiving Break

• December 22-January 2 Winter Break

• January 6 Students Return Following Winter Break

• January 19 Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday

• February 16 Presidents' Day Holiday

• March 1, 2, 4 Parent Conferences

• March 15-19 Spring Break

• April 9 Inclement Weather/Holiday

• May 26 Last Day of School

• May 28 Inclement Weather Day

"This year we feel more employees and community members had an opportunity to express their opinion on the calendar choices that were offered," said Moses. "This is an issue that affects many in our district and city and we are very satisfied with the response we received.'
