15 Jan 2003

Ceremony Features Student Performances, Message from Retired Local Minister

DALLAS—The Dallas Independent School District annual celebration to honor the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday is scheduled for 7 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 21, at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church, 1819 North Washington Ave.

The district honors Dr. King with an annual celebration to commemorate his timeless vision of building a more just and peaceful world, said Clarence Glover, DISD multicultural education executive director. "We must continually challenge ourselves in building a global community and preparing our students to live and work together in it."

The celebration will feature performances by DISD's Jubilee Chorus and the All-City Honors Choir. The keynote speaker is the Rev. Zan W. Holmes Jr., former pastor of St. Luke "Community" United Methodist Church.

Schools will be closed on Monday, Jan. 20, in observance of the national holiday honoring Dr. King. The national theme for the Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Observance is Remember! Celebrate! Act! A Day On, Not a Day Off.

For information about the district's celebration, contact the Multicultural Education Department at (214) 932-5111. The public is invited to attend.
