Month Long of Activities is Scheduled Throughout the District
DALLAS— Students across the Dallas Independent School District are participating in activities to celebrate African-American Heritage Month during February. The theme this year is
The African-American Heritage Month began when Carter G. Woodson, noted Black scholar and historian and son of former slaves, founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History in 1915, which was later renamed the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. He initiated Black History Week, Feb. 12, 1926. For many years, the second week of February (chosen so as to coincide with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln) was celebrated by African Americans in the United States. In 1976, as part of the nation's bicentennial, it was expanded and became known as Black History Month. The association has selected the national theme since 1926.
Many DISD schools have planned activities in observance of African-American Heritage Month. A list of some of the activities is attached.
