American Airlines Mini-Grants Fund Special Projects

29 Jan 2003

Winning Proposals Include Reading, Writing and Student Leadership

DALLAS—Teachers from 16 schools within the Dallas Independent School District will be presented more than $14,000 in grants for projects to support learning at the 6 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 30, meeting of the School Board of Trustees.

The American Airlines Mini-Grants Program was initiated in 1985, made possible by a $100,000 grant from American Airlines. Administered by a committee of district teachers and administrators, the funding enables school staff to develop and implement programs not funded through the school's budget.

This year, students will benefit from innovative projects that enhance learning such as The Kids Writing Connection. This project pairs student writers with professional writers and illustrators. Another grant-winning program is The Leadership Education and Debate Project, which allows students enrolled in government and law to study debate and compete at university level. These students later teach what they have learned to fellow students.
