DISD Students Become College Students for a Day

6 Mar 2003

Parents Invited to Join Them for Orientation at El Centro College

DALLAS—More than 200 elementary and middle school Dallas Independent School District students will get a taste of higher education and various technical careers at 10 a.m. Friday, March 7, at El Centro College.

As participants in 21st Century College for Young People, an event sponsored by the district's Majority to Minority Scholarship program, students and parents will spend a day learning about the community college experience, career options and financial aid resources. Special seminars on how to prepare their child for college and the many financial options available will be offered to parents.

"This event offers students the opportunity to experience college for a day. They'll attend classes, meet professors and hopefully get excited about attending college or pursuing a technical career," said Judy Thomas, DISD student transfer coordinator. "Most of the participants are a product of the district's Minority to Majority Transfer program and will be eligible to receive a scholarship to any one of the seven Dallas County community colleges. So college is not a dream, it can be a reality for them."

For each year of participation in the Majority to Minority Scholarship program, students receive a $350 scholarship, enough for one semester's tuition. The M-M Scholarship may be used for college during the regular or summer terms. "Many district student have taken advantage of this program and have been able to afford a college education, even if they have limited financial resources."
