Superintendent Presents Seniors Scholarships and Professional Teaching Contracts to Work for District After Becoming Fully Certified

DALLAS–The general superintendent of the Dallas Independent School District Tuesday awarded 57 seniors $2,000 scholarships and offered them teaching positions in the district upon graduation and certification as teachers. Superintendent Mike Moses presented the scholarships and professional teaching contracts at the DISD's annual Superintendent's Scholarship Reception held at The Science Place at Fair Park.

The scholarship recipients represented some of the most outstanding members of the district's 2003 graduating class and consisted of at least one senior from every DISD high school. The scholarship awards were made in recognition of the students' outstanding community service, academic achievement and character recommendations.

"It is always a special event to recognize students for their commitment to their high school education," Moses said. "The scholarship is to reward them for their achievement and to provide financial support for a college education."

The graduating seniors will share in $114,000 in scholarships. The scholarships are funded through the proceeds received from the Superintendent's Golf Classic.

For the second year, the superintendent offered an employment contract to work for the district to recipients of the Superintendent's Scholarship. The recipients, along with other students in the top 10 percent of their graduating class, will be guaranteed a teaching position in the Dallas Independent School District if they complete all graduation requirements of a university and become fully certified teachers within the next five years.
