DISD Awards Luncheon Celebrates School Volunteers and Partners

29 May 2003

More Than 1,250 to Attend Special Event

DALLAS—At a luncheon Thursday, May 29, Dallas Independent School District Superintendent Mike Moses will participate in a celebration at the Adam's Mark Hotel, in the Lone Star Ballroom (directly opposite the hotel, 400 Olive St.). Doors open at 11:15 a.m.; the program begins at 12:25 p.m.

The DISD has 28,000 volunteers and 3,000 partner groups, that donated more than 755,000 hours this year to support students and teachers. Twelve major awards will be presented and two special presentations will be made to groups whose service has made a significant impact in the district.

The Superintendent's Award winner is Texas Instruments, a company that has been involved with the DISD since the late 1950s. Texas Instruments has been very generous not only with volunteers, time and expertise, but also financially, providing millions of dollars through the corporation and through its foundation.

The Dr. Emmett Conrad Extra Mile Award will recognize the National Society of Black Engineers. These volunteers support a Saturday morning math tutoring program that began in 1989, and assists students from across the city.
