Trustees Approve Revision to the Student Discipline Policy

DALLAS-The Dallas Independent School District's revised discipline policy will be proactive and character building, rather than reactive punishment - based techniques.

On August 12, the DISD Board of Trustees, in a vote of 7-2, revised the student discipline policy as it relates to corporal punishment.

Parents or guardians must now write a letter notifying the principal if they want corporal punishment to be used on their child as a discipline management technique.  Corporal punishment will not be administered without this written request.

Corporal punishment, when authorized, will be administered only by the school principal or assistant principal.  It's the responsibility of the principal to report every instance of the use of corporal punishment to the office of student discipline. Depending on the severity of the offense other forms of discipline may be available to the campus administrator including verbal correction, cooling off period, peer mediation, detention and out of school suspension.
