Regular Board Meetings Held Fourth Thursday of Month
DALLAS–The Dallas Independent School District Board of Trustees will hold the first regular board meeting of the new school year at 6 p.m., Thursday, August 28.
Board officers and the positions they hold are: Hollis Brashear, president; Lois Parrott, first vice president; Joe May, second vice president; Ron Price, secretary. Other trustee members are Rafael Anchia, Lew Blackburn, Jack Lowe, George Williams and Ken Zornes.
Briefing meetings are held second Tuesdays of each month to assist the board by preparing policy alternatives and implications for board deliberation. Board committee assignments for the briefings have been announced for 2003-2004:
11 a.m. Business Briefing–Ron Price, chair
Committee members: Rafael Anchia, Lew Blackburn, Hollis Brashear, Jack Lowe, Lois Parrott, George Williams
Business briefings allow the general superintendent and staff to keep the board apprised of ongoing information and updates about all budget, financial, facilities, technology, internal and external auditing and other business related to district operation.
2 p.m. Policy Briefing–Rafael Anchia, chair
Committee members: Hollis Brashear, Joe May, Lois Parrott, Ken Zornes
The policy briefings provide the trustees the avenue to receive reports of discrepancies, gaps, inconsistencies and recommendations for revision or initiation of board policies to remain in alignment with the policy governance model adopted by the trustees.4 p.m. Education Briefing–Jack Lowe, chair Committee members: Lew Blackburn, Joe May, Lois Parrott, Ken Zornes In the education briefings, trustees receive informational reports and updates about DISD curricular and academic pursuits.
The two other standing meetings for the board are the Committee of the Whole and the regular monthly board meeting. All meetings of the board are open to the public.
The Committee of the Whole, comprised of all nine trustees and chaired by the board president, meets monthly on the third Wednesday at 4 p.m.
Registered speakers may address specific agenda items, board policies or matters of public concern at Committee of the Whole meetings. To address the board, the public may register until 3 p.m. the day of the meeting at the Office of Board Services located in the DISD School Administration Building, or by telephoning (972) 925-3720.
Registered speakers who have not addressed the board at the Committee of the Whole meeting may make public comment on specific agenda items at the regular board meeting. Individuals who have not addressed the board in the past 30 day period may speak at the completion of the regular board meeting. Registration guidelines are the same as for the Committee of the Whole.
The regular board meetings are held monthly on the fourth Thursday at 6 p.m. A superintendent's report, trustee's bulletins and announcements, board resolutions and award presentations are traditional agenda items for the monthly board meeting. The regular board meetings are held in the auditorium of the School Administration Building, 3700 Ross Ave.
