DISD's First Parent Academy of School Year, Sept. 18

28 Aug 2003

Academies Offer Information Parents Will Not Want to Miss!

DALLAS–The first in a series of popular Dallas Independent School District Parent Academies will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, at W. W. Samuell High School, 8928 Palisade Drive.

With the theme, "Families Learning Together," the academies provide parents basic information about the district and its programs, services and resources. This year, duplicate academies will be held at eight locations. Parents will attend the site designated for the area of the district in which their child attends school.

"Last year's three academies were very well-attended, so we know there is a need for them," said René Martinez, special assistant to the superintendent–Dropout Prevention and Community Outreach. "This year, we are targeting more areas in the district to increase the number of parents we reach. In a district as large as ours, it is important to bring these resources closer to the neighborhoods we serve."

Workshop themes to be offered include compulsory attendance; accessing district services, such as discipline management and truancy reduction and addressing the needs of special needs children. Other topics are test-taking strategies for the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills exam and how to prepare for college.

Offered in English and Spanish, plus other languages depending on the location, the sessions are designed to increase parents' knowledge so they can reinforce, in the home, the importance of a good education. Childcare will be provided for participants, in addition to refreshments.

Upcoming academies will be held throughout the year, including one at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at Bryan Adams High School and another at 8 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at Greiner Middle School.
