School Zone Dallas Grabs Two Lone Star Emmy Nominations

Dallas ISD Only School District In Texas To Receive Such Honors

DALLAS-The Dallas Independent School District snagged two Lone Star Emmy Award nominations Thursday, Sept. 18, for its unique news magazine television show School Zone Dallas .

Launched in October 2002, the monthly show is hosted by students and produced by the district's staff of Dallas Schools Television. DISD is the only school district in Texas to receive the prestigious Lone Star Emmy nominations this year. Cathy Reaves is the executive director of Dallas Schools Television, and the executive producer of School Zone Dallas is Jon Dahlander.

"These nominations reaffirm our decision to launch a 30-minute television show hosted by our very own students," said Dahlander. "We are excited about the opportunities of being nominated for two Lone Star Emmys."

DSTV was nominated in the categories of Outstanding Magazine Format Show and Outstanding Informational Program . DISD is in good company, with other category nominees being KXAS-TV Channel 5 and WFAA Channel 8 in Dallas, Houston PBS, and two other Houston television stations. The winners will be announced at the first-ever Lone Star Emmy Awards Ceremony in Dallas on October 18.

"We have many good things happening here in the Dallas Independent School District, and it is exciting that we now have youngsters in our district who have made a name for themselves in the broadcast world by being nominated for Emmy awards," said DISD Superintendent Mike Moses. "School Zone Dallas is a positive reflection of our school district that can be seen by thousands of viewers each month through our valuable partnership with KERA. Our hats are off to them for working so closely with the district to provide us the opportunity to air our good work on their station. This is a great example of what happens when the district works with the local community for the benefit of public education."

The show is produced at DSTV by Reaves, Dahlander, Michael Bell, Mark Bergner, Carmen Alvarado-Vasquez, Ernest Conde, Marcus Lopez and Vicky Mitcham Probeck. Students who appeared on last year's season of programs were Royce Williams, Lincoln High School; Ismenia Gaviria, Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts; Savannah Person, Seagoville High School; Kyle Howard, Molina High School; Christy Terry, Skyline High School; Kirsten Brew, Carter High School; Rebecca Ramirez, Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts; Lauren Elliott, Bryan Adams High School and Angele Coleman, Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts.

The second season of School Zone Dallas will feature several new cast members and will begin airing Sunday, Oct. 5, at 10 a.m. on KERA-Channel 13.
