DISD's Second Parent Academy Set For October 4

26 Sep 2003

First Academy Drew 400 Parents

DALLAS–The Dallas Independent School District will host its second Parent Academy of the year from 8 a.m.-noon, Saturday, Oct. 4, at Bryan Adams High School, 2101 Millmar Dr.

The first academy held earlier this month, drew a crowd of more than 400 parents. "This year, we are targeting more areas in the district to increase the number of parents we reach. In a district as large as ours, it is important to provide information to parents as often as possible and bring these resources closer to the neighborhoods we serve," said René Martinez, special assistant to the superintendent–Dropout Prevention and Community Outreach.

Workshops include discipline management and truancy reduction and addressing the needs of special needs children. Other topics are test-taking strategies for the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills exam and how to prepare for college.

Offered in English and Spanish, plus other languages depending on the location, the sessions are designed to increase parents' knowledge so they can reinforce, in the home, the importance of a good education. Childcare will be provided for participants, in addition to refreshments.

Parents are encouraged to attend the site designated for the area of the district in which their child attends school. Upcoming academies will be held at Greiner Middle School on Nov. 1 and at Rusk Middle School on Nov. 15.
