DISD Students Celebrate with Reading, Storytelling & Food

DALLAS—In November students in the Dallas Independent School District will be participating in activities in recognition of American Indian Heritage Month. Designated by a presidential proclamation, American Indian Heritage Month acknowledges the rich heritage of Native Americans and the many contributions they have made to the American culture.

Among the activities planned, George Peabody Elementary School will initiate a reading club for students with American Indian ancestry on Thursday, Nov. 6, at 8:15 a.m. The program will continue throughout the school year. Special guests will be DISD's American Indian Education specialists Peggy Larney and Leo Wesley. The school is located at 3101 Raydell Place.

On Tuesday, Nov. 18, students at C.F. Carr Elementary School will conduct a Native American "show and tell" program with American Indian Education specialist Toyce Wesley as their special guest. Also, on Friday, Nov. 21, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., they will host a "Reading Pow-Wow" in the gymnasium. Students will rotate through four centers where they will listen to storytelling, taste Native American foods, select books and make crafts. The school is located at 1952 Bayside St.

J. Leslie Patton Elementary School, located at 3434 South R.L. Freeway, will host a "Totem Pole Contest" on Thursday, Nov. 20, at 1:30 p.m. in the cafeteria with performances by the fourth grade physical education and music classes.
