DISD Parent Academy Addresses Needs of Area Parents and Students

12 Nov 2003

Rusk Middle School will Host Saturday's Event

DALLAS–The Dallas Independent School District will host a Parent Academy from 8 a.m.-noon, Saturday, Nov. 15, at Rusk Middle School, 2929 Inwood Road.

Some highly-praised topics include DISD 101, in which parents will be offered information about attendance and truancy, discipline procedures, grades and report cards. Other workshops that attract parent attention include addressing the needs of special needs children, test-taking strategies for the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills exam and how to prepare for college.

"Word of mouth of the success of previous academies has spread around our communities," said Rene Martinez, special assistant to the superintendent—Dropout Prevention and Community Outreach. "Parents have commented on how beneficial the information has been to them."

The goal of the sessions is to help parents become more familiar with what children are expected to learn and how a parent may assist in the success of their child's education. Strategies for learning at home also will be provided to parents.

The sessions are offered in English and Spanish. Child care and refreshments are provided to participants.
