DISD Magnet Schools Application Process Begins

13 Jan 2004

Interested Participants Should Attend Magnet Fair January 24

DALLAS–Students interested in enrolling in one of the magnet, vanguard or academy programs offered by the Dallas Independent School District should attend the magnet school information fair scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, at the Yvonne Ewell Townview Center, 1201 East 8th Street.

Under the district's magnet school system are magnets for high school students, academies for middle school students and vanguards for elementary students. The schools provide career-oriented or a special interest curriculum in addition to a complete academic program.

"One of the unique aspects of the magnet school concept is that students enjoy an opportunity to discover their talents, and they are able to develop those talents in a very challenging environment," said Carolyn Bailey, area superintendent. "The magnet program allows students to receive a comprehensive educational foundation, but they also will be ahead of the curve in a career field by the time they graduate from high school."

Program representatives will be present at the fair to assist students and parents in preparing the application form and portfolio required for admission consideration. Applications will be distributed and personnel will be on hand to answer questions. Important dates include:

January 26, 2004

School Administration Bldg., 3700 Ross Ave.

February 2, 2004

February 20, 2004

Under the guidelines approved by the DISD Board of Trustees in the fall, students will be selected based on their grade-point average, performance on national norm-references tests and a third assessment, such as an interview, essay or audition.

More than 1,500 students every year are selected to study a specialized and focused career-oriented curriculum. These areas range from dentistry to forensic science, banking to law, social services, computer engineering, and the arts.

Magnet school information is being delivered to students in the district. Additionally, letters informing parents about the fair will be sent to students who will enroll in grades three, six and eight.
