Statement from Superintendent Mike Moses on Death of Cary Middle School Student

13 Jan 2004

DALLAS-The following is a statement from Dallas Independent School District Superintendent Mike Moses concerning the death of a 14-year-old Edward H. Cary Middle School student who died Tuesday evening.

"On behalf of the Dallas Independent School District, we want to express our condolences to the family of this young man. This is a very distressing and sorrowful day in our district.

"It troubles us deeply when incidents such as this happen on our campuses. Safety is a priority, and we will continue to be vigilant in order to provide a safe and secure learning environment on all our campuses.

"We will have counselors on hand Wednesday to provide support for students, faculty and members of the community who have been affected by this incident. We also will have additional police supervision at the school.

"Parents place the care of their children in our hands each day and we will continue to take that responsibility very seriously. Obviously there will be a time for us to review our procedures and any steps we can take to improve school safety. However, tonight is a night of grief. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of this young man," Moses said.
