Grants Enable Teachers and Campuses to Expand Learning

Money Funds Innovative School Programs

DALLAS– Grants were presented during the Dallas Independent School District Board of Trustees meeting on Thursday, Jan. 29, to the winners of the American Airlines Mini-Grants and to the Innovative Education Program grant winners.

Teachers who submitted successful proposals in the American Airlines Mini-Grant competition received up to $750 each to fund projects designed to explore classroom techniques or educational projects. One winning proposal came from Pearl C. Anderson Learning Center teacher Tamiko Ellis for Creating Science Interest , an after–school program in which students use writing and forensic science skills as they investigate six fictional crimes. An additional 13 grants to teachers were announced.

The Innovative Education Program utilizes federal funding from the No Child Left Behind legislation to provide grants of $5,000 to each campus selected. One of the winners, The Amish Internet E-Commerce Exchange Project, was submitted by Lincoln High School. A team of 14 Lincoln students will develop a professional business plan and set up a Web site to exchange products and goods on the Internet between Texas students and an Amish community in Ohio. Eight additional campus grants also were awarded.
