DISD Students Celebrate with Reading, Essays, Food & Dance
DALLAS—Dallas Independent School District students will join the state in celebrating Texas Public Schools Week, March 1-5.
This year's theme is Texas Public Schools… Educating With Heart! This year marks the 50th year of observance and brings a special focus on education. From the students to the business community, the theme symbolizes the compassionate side of educating students with sincerity, honesty, and whole-hearted caring.
In recognition of Texas Public Schools Week, elementary, middle and high schools across the district have planned activities that focus on the school as a community of students, teachers, parents, and business partners.
Students at Jimmie Tyler Brashear Early Childhood Development Center will host a weeklong array of events, including: March 1 – Schoolwide displays and the principal's Texas Toast Breakfast; March 2 – Muffin's for Mom; March 3 – Donut's for Dad and a Tour of Texas Museum Walk; March 4 – a schoolwide Texas Two-Step Line Dance; and March 5 – a Taste of Texas Chili Cook-off along with a Texas style show.
Students at Julia C. Frazier Elementary will host a variety of events to recognize Texas Public School Week. Daily announcements will include history facts about the state. On March 2, students will sign their name on a Texas-size map in the cafeteria labeling Dallas as the Heart of Texas. On Wednesday, March 3, each student will make a Texas-shaped necklace for teachers to wear and they will also wear their college alumni shirts on Friday, March 5. On Thursday, March 4, students will invite a community guest to read a book about Texas or a book by a Texas author.
Students at W.H. Atwell Fundamental Academy will participate in an essay contest; and on March 4, they will invite parents to have lunch with them. They will conclude their week by hosting a Western Day on Friday, March 5.
