Formal Banquet April 21 Honors Student Writers, Families and Volunteers
DALLAS–John F. Kennedy Learning Center students in the Dallas Independent School District whose work is published in a literary magazine will be celebrated at a banquet Wednesday, April 21, at 6:30 p.m. at the Adam's Mark Hotel, 400 N. Olive St.p>
Each year, upper grade students apply to be part of the Kids Writing Connection magazine, a professional-level publication now in its fifth year. Student writers are matched with adult writers and editors who nurture, mentor them and edit their work in preparation for press deadlines.
"Kids Writing Connection demonstrates the power of the printed word, as students who have been published serve as role models and motivators for the following year's authors and illustrators," said community liaison Jesus Guzman. "In addition, many of our parents have been inspired to support the academic needs of their children through this reading and writing project."
Groups and businesses providing support include the Dallas Press Club, Borders Books, Spaeth Communications, Don Crum & Associates and the Dallas Junior League. For the past five years, the Adams Mark Hotel has underwritten the cost of the annual banquet honoring sponsors, volunteers, students and their parents, and school staff. It's a tradition new general manager Michael Spammer is pleased to continue.
"In times of continuous negative news throughout our community, it is good to hear great news such as this. Reading and writing are extremely important skills, and we are happy to support the school and the students as this project helps them grow."
