DISD Students Observe Cinco De Mayo Celebration

History Lessons, Music and School /Community Activities Mark the Occasion

DALLAS- During the first week of May, Dallas Independent School District students will celebrate Cinco de Mayo (May 5), a national observance that commemorates Mexico's defeat of French invaders in 1862.

On May 5, students from Edward Titche Elementary, 9610 Bruton Road, will display their talents, including singing, dancing, theater, and poetry. The school will feature a replica of a marketplace with foods commonly used in Mexican households. Thomas C. Marsh Middle School students will enjoy performances by Flamenco dancer Margarita Bruce and presentations by guest speakers. Performances will be at 9:30 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. at 3838 Crown Shore.

Carter High School students will welcome the Molina High School folklorico dance group at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, May 6. In addition to the performance, students will learn about similarities in the American and Mexican culture. Carter High School is located at 1819 West Wheatland Rd.

Students at R. C. Burleson Elementary will enjoy a taste of Mexico on May 7. A local restaurant will provide enchiladas and community parents will donate various side dishes and their assistance in serving over 400 students. The school is located at 6300 Elam Road. Also on May 7, at Silberstein Elementary, students will celebrate the observance with a Family Fiesta featuring food, games, and a show that evening for the community from 4 p.m.-7 p.m. The movie, La Batalla de Puebla, will be shown at 7 p.m. in the auditorium. The school is located at 5940 Hollis Avenue.

The reason for the Cinco de Mayo celebration is the focus of a 9 a.m. program May 11 at A. W. Blanton Elementary School, 8915 Geenmound. Kindergarten teacher Don Romero will explain to students the historical incidents that led to the battle and its importance to Mexico and the United States. Traditional music will be played by a harpist of the Mariachi Jalisciense.
