Advisory Board of Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, Rotary Club of Dallas Recognized for Outstanding Support
DALLAS—The Dallas Independent School District on Monday celebrated 35 years of volunteer and partner involvement in schools at its annual Partners and Volunteer Recognition event held in the Lone Star Ballroom of the Adams Mark Hotel.
Superintendent Mike Moses praised hundreds of volunteers and businesses for their contributions of time and money in support of DISD students, and made special awards to two organizations for outstanding dedication and exceptional contributions. He presented the Superintendent's Award to Rotary Club of Dallas whose diverse programs provide books to DISD kindergartners, recognize outstanding teachers, develop student leadership and educate students about the dangers of drug use.
In presenting the Dr. Emmett Conrad Extra Mile Award to the advisory board of the Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, Moses commended the group for its efforts to improve school facilities and promote student achievement. The Extra Mile Award is named after the late Dallas school district trustee, Dr. Emmett Conrad, and recognizes an individual or group that has provided services over an extended period of time showing excellence and growth in support of students and the school district. Among the advisory board's numerous efforts over its 27-year history is the recently announced capital campaign to raise $20 million to expand and renovate the school.
The luncheon and awards program honored the contributions of the district's more than 40,000 volunteers. Lauding the volunteers' work in DISD schools, Moses said that if volunteer hours donated to the district were calculated at the going rate of $16.50 per hour, they would add up to a benefit of more than $10 million annually.
He also cited their impact on students and the quality of education. "There is nothing that has a greater impact on our young people than caring adults who support and nurture them," he said.
Individuals and organizations presented awards and the schools with which they work include:
