DISD Brokering the System for Resolution of Concerns

27 Jul 2004

Maintaining an open communication with administrators will solve problems more effectively

Dallas--The Dallas Independent School District wants to emphasize to parents the process to follow to express concerns and resolve matters to the satisfaction of all. Parents must first gather all the accurate information of the issue that has occurred and call or go to their school immediately.

"It is important that parents express their concerns or problems to the appropriate administrator to reach a solution," said Alba Marrero, principal, Maria Moreno Elementary.

The teacher is the first person with whom an individual should try to resolve a concern. Parents are advised to request a parent–teacher conference. "Teachers are more than willing to work with parents and resolve problems," said Marrero. However, if an agreement cannot be reached, the next person with whom to discuss the concern is the assistant principal/principal.

As the instructional leaders, the assistant principal and the principal are responsible for setting the tone of discipline and instruction. "Principals and their administrators have the responsibility to serve the community and the school's parents, therefore, we do our best to respond to them immediately and effectively," said Marrero. Parents are encouraged to ask for an appointment to speak with the assistant principal or the principal if they have any suggestions or concerns about discipline, instruction or student activities.

When a concern cannot be resolved at the school building level, the next step is to visit the principal's supervisor, his/her area superintendent. When problems cannot be resolved with an area superintendent, the next step is the office of the deputy superintendent for administrative services. These individuals are accessible to parents; appointments are recommended. Questions and concerns can be directed to them at various area offices by calling 972-925-3700.

If an accord is not reached with any of the above-mentioned authorities, citizens of the district are welcome to attend the board meetings and appear before trustees. Trustees may be reached by contacting the Office of Board Services at 972-925-3720. Board meetings are held every fourth Thursday of the month.

Maintaining an open communication with school administrators will help parents reach a solution to their concerns easier, faster and effectively. District interpreters are available to facilitate meetings with parents who speak languages other than English.
