30 Jul 2004

Orientation for new teachers is Aug. 3-6

DALLAS--Dallas Independent School District has hired around 800 new teachers for the 2004-2005 school year which starts Aug. 16.

More than 90 of the new employees are bilingual teachers for grades K-3 recruited from the district's Alternative Certification program.

The new teachers will receive orientation starting Aug. 3 – Aug. 6 in areas such as classroom management and multi-cultural education.

As part of the four-day orientation, a new teachers' fair will be held, Thursday, Aug. 5, at the Apparel Mart in Dallas from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

"This will be a great opportunity for teachers because they get to know each other and learn about the district," said Kristie Brame, director of New Teachers Academy.

Community and district representatives will gather to welcome the new educators. Board President Lois Parrott will welcome the teachers and Harry Wong, author of The First Day of School, will talk to teachers about preparing their classrooms, classroom procedures and teaching.

Community vendors and groups will host booths to provide teachers information on community and district resources.
