DISD Produces Educational and Informative TV Show for Parents

2 Aug 2004

The show will be transmitted in English and Spanish

DALLAS-Dallas Independent School District administrators are using their partnerships with local television stations to deliver a message to parents via Preparing for College or Preparándose para la Universidad, which will air in Spanish Saturday, Aug. 21, at 9 a.m. on Univision – KUVN – 23.

DISD wants to educate parents whose children will be attending college soon about the process they will go through. To achieve this goal, Dallas Schools Television has produced Preparing for College.

"We created this program as more than just a one time video," said Jon Dahlander, director of Dallas Schools Television. "It should last five years as a good guide for parents."

This guide will serve parents and students, as an orientation in areas such as parental involvement, choosing the right courses, filling out admission applications properly, applying for financial aid, and working closer with high school counselors to make a student's college entrance easier.

To motivate the future college students, the program will feature a story on Alicia Martinez, a former DISD student and Pinkston High School graduate, who fought many challenges and obstacles to earn her college degree to later become an executive in the oil industry.

The school district is very grateful of their partnership with Univision and the support they provide to reach the Hispanic community in Dallas.

DISD is also teaming again with KERA, which will broadcast Preparing For College for the English speaking audience Sunday, Aug. 29, at 9:30 a.m. This year, KERA will broadcast the show through channel 13, and higher ratings are anticipated said Dahlander.

Preparing for College will be hosted in Spanish by Rebecca Garcia and Raul Treviño; it will be hosted in English by Joe Muñoz and Libby Daniels.

Todo Sobre las Escuelas de sus Hijos or All About Your Child's Schools, another show produced by the district last year, will be re-broadcast through Univision – KUVN – 23 in Spanish Saturday, Aug. 14, at 9 a.m. This television program is a tool parents may use to navigate through the Dallas schools.

The program will show parents the process for enrolling children, the importance of sending children to class the first day of school, and the consequences of truancy, as well as tips on how to help students their entire school career. Other topics of the show include immunizations, academic plans, school counselors, and the important role parents play in their child's academic success.
