Community Invited to Attend School Board Meetings

Regular Board Meetings Held Fourth Thursday of Month

DALLAS–The Dallas Independent School District Board of Trustees will hold the first regular board meeting of the new school year at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 26, in the auditorium of the School Administration Building, 3700 Ross Ave.

The regular board meetings are scheduled at 6 p.m. on the following Thursdays: Sept. 30, Oct. 28, Nov. 18, Dec. 16, Jan. 27, Feb. 24, Mar. 31, Apr. 28, May 26 and June 23. A superintendent's report, trustee's bulletins and announcements, board resolutions and award presentations are traditional agenda items for the monthly board meeting. All meetings of the board are open to the public.

Board officers and the positions they hold are: Lois Parrott, president; Hollis Brashear, first vice president; Joe May, second vice president and Lew Blackburn, secretary. Other trustee members are Nancy Bingham, Jerome Garza, Jack Lowe, Ron Price and Ken Zornes.

"The Board of Trustees welcomes input from parents and community members," Parrott said. "We want your assistance as we continue to improve our schools. Our community is always invited to attend monthly meetings and briefings of the Board of Trustees."

Briefings are held to assist the board by preparing policy alternatives and implications for board deliberation. Scheduled briefings will be held on the following Tuesdays: Aug. 10, Sept. 14, Oct. 12, Nov. 2, Nov. 30, Jan. 11, Feb, 8, Mar. 8, April 12, May 10 and June 7. Board committee assignments for the briefings have been announced for 2004-2005:

11 a.m., Business Briefing–Ron Price, chair

Committee members: Hollis Brashear, Jerome Garza, Jack Lowe, Ken Zornes.

Business briefings allow the general superintendent and staff to keep the board apprised of ongoing information and updates about budget, finance, facilities, technology, internal and external auditing and other business related to district operations.

2 p.m. Policy Briefing–Joe May, chair

Committee members: Nancy Bingham, Hollis Brashear, Jerome Garza, Ken Zornes.

Policy briefings provide the trustees an avenue to receive reports of discrepancies, gaps, inconsistencies and recommendations for revision or initiation of board policies to remain in alignment with the policy governance model adopted by the trustees.

4 p.m., Education Briefing–Jack Lowe, chair

Committee members: Nancy Bingham, Lew Blackburn, Ron Price, Ken Zornes.

In the education briefings, trustees receive informational reports and updates about DISD curricular and academic pursuits.

Another standing meeting of the board is the Committee of the Whole meeting. The Committee of the Whole, comprised of all nine trustees and chaired by the board president, will meet at 4 p.m. on the following Wednesdays: Aug. 18, Sept. 22, Oct. 20, Nov. 10, Dec. 8, Jan. 19, Feb. 16, Mar. 23, Apr. 20, May 18 and June 15.

Registered speakers may address specific agenda items, board policies or matters of public concern at Committee of the Whole meetings. To address the board, the public may register until 3 p.m. the day of the meeting at the Office of Board Services located in the DISD School Administration Building or by telephoning (972) 925-3720.

Registered speakers who have not addressed the board at the Committee of the Whole meeting may make public comment on specific agenda items at the regular board meeting. Individuals who have not addressed the board in the past 30-day period may speak at the completion of the regular board meeting. Registration guidelines are the same as for the Committee of the Whole.
