September is Hispanic Heritage Month

DISD Students Celebrate with Costumes, Dances and Poetry

DALLAS—Students in the Dallas Independent School District will participate in activities in recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15 - October 15.

Designated by a presidential proclamation, the observance acknowledges the rich heritage of Hispanic Americans and the many contributions they have made to the American culture. This years' national theme is "Making a Difference in Our Communities and Our Nation."

Among the activities planned for Thursday, September 16, Harrell Budd Elementary School students have arranged for two performances by the Aztec dancers "Cualli Tepeolt," at 8:30 and 9:30 a.m., in the school auditorium. The school is located at 2121 S. Marsalis Ave.

At Walnut Hill Elementary School students will celebrate "Dies y Siez de Septiembre," with students performing songs, dance and poetry in the school auditorium at 2 p.m. The school is located at 10115 Midway Rd.

The Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts' Ballet Folklorico and Mariachi groups will perform Sept. 16, 11:45 - 1:20 p.m. in the Green Room during student lunch hours. The school is located at 2501 Flora.

The students at W.E. Greiner Exploratory Arts Academy Middle School will present Ballet Folklorico dancers at the school's PTA meeting 7 p.m., Oct. 26, in the Stevie Ray Vaughan Performance Hall. The school is located at 501 South Edgefield Ave.

In addition, DISD central administration staff in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month will host as guest speaker Elsa Ramon, NBC Channel 5, news anchor and reporter. The topic will be the Future of Hispanic American Education, Sept. 15, 10 a.m. - noon. The School Administration Building is located at 3700 Ross Ave.
