DISD First Parent Academy for 2004-2005 September 11

3 Sep 2004

'Families Learning Together' To Achieve Success Academy's Theme

DALLAS–The first in a series of Dallas Independent School District parent academies will be held from 8 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Sept. 11, at Seagoville High School, 15920 Seagoville Rd.

Under the theme, "Families Learning Together," the program will offer information to parents so they can enhance their knowledge about the importance of education to succeed in life. "Education is the key to success in the 21st Century," said Edward Baca, Area 1 superintendent, who will host the first parent academy of the school year. "The lowest paying job will be left to those with the least education," he said.

Offered in English and Spanish, the academies provide parents basic information about the district and its programs and services. In addition, they are designed to meet the needs of parents residing within each community so they can become more familiar with the resources in the schools within their areas. Parents are encouraged to attend the site closest to where their child attends school.

Workshops to be offered include compulsory attendance; accessing district services such as discipline management and truancy reduction and addressing the needs of special needs children. Other topics are test-taking strategies for the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills exam and how to prepare for college.

The first academy will be serving the communities in southeast Dallas. Two other academies for Area 1 will follow Thursday, Sept. 23, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Samuell High School, 8928 Palisade Dr, and Saturday, Sept. 25, from 8 a.m. to noon at Spruce High School, 9733 Old Seagoville Rd.

Childcare will be provided. For more information, call 972-925-3970.
