DISD RENAMES SCHOOLS AND FACILITIES

21 Sep 2004

40 Schools, Facilities and Portions of Buildings Included

DALLAS-- The Dallas Independent School District trustees have renamed schools and facilities to honor local community leaders, famous former students, elected officials and other prominent people.

About 40 schools and facilities from Trustee Districts 3, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 were included in the renaming process.   Among the schools are Maya Angelou High School, formally Health Special School; Irma Rangel Young Women’s Leadership School, formally Stephen J. Hay Bldg. and Otto M. Fridia Jr. Alternative School, formally Metropolitan Alternative School.

In accordance with board policy, approval is required for the naming or renaming of all district facilities.   In general, schools may be named for persons who have attained prominence locally or nationally or in the fields of education, science, art, statesmanship, political science, or military achievement; early pioneers of Dallas or the state of Texas; or presidents of the United States.   Schools also may be named based on a distinctive geographic (e.g.: Seagoville High School).

In the naming of schools, living persons shall not be considered, however, the board may at its discretion name portions of a building, such as the library or auditorium, for persons of prominence whether living or dead.

The following is a complete listing of the renamed schools and facilities:
