Winners will be announced October 16 in Houston
DALLAS— The Dallas Independent School District was the only Texas school district to receive six of the 278 Lone Star Emmy nominations announced at a reception held last week at the Gaylord Texan Resort and Conference Center in Grapevine, Texas.
Dallas Schools Television, an office in the DISD Communication Services Department, produces programs that were nominated. The Lone Star Emmy Chapter honored School Zone Dallas with four nominations; Nuevos Amigos, and the Think Again public service campaign were also nominated.
"For those of us who work with the staff of Dallas Schools Television, it really is no surprise that they are starting to achieve this level of recognition," said DISD Interim Superintendent Dr. Larry Groppel. "Their work is uniformly outstanding and they are leading the way for other school districts, not only in Texas but throughout the country, to follow."
School Zone Dallas was nominated in the Outstanding Informational Program and Outstanding Magazine Format categories. Launched in October 2002, the monthly show is hosted by students. Last year, DSTV won its first Emmy in the Outstanding Informational Program category.
"We are also thrilled that our two student co-hosts of last year's edition of </>School Zone Dallas, Abe Hernandez and Kirsten Brew, have been asked to serve as presenters at this year's Emmy gala," said Groppel. "They will have a once in a lifetime opportunity to share the stage with state and national broadcasting legends."
The 30-minute news magazine television show received two nominations in the individual segment categories. CSI: Withers, produced by Mark Bergner, is up against two other nominees in the Informational Segment category. Young Strings, produced by Rosie Suarez, was nominated in the Magazine Format segment category and is also up against two other nominations.
Nuevos Amigos, DSTV's elementary Spanish language instruction program, was one of two nominees announced in the Children/Youth program category.
Produced by Ernest Conde and Jon Dahlander, the Think Again campaign was nominated in the Outstanding Public Service campaign with two other nominees. The campaign piece aired at the American Airlines Center.
Cathy Reaves is the executive director of Dallas Schools Television, and the executive producer of School Zone Dallas is Jon Dahlander.
