SEVENTY-ONE DISD SCHOOLS RATED EXEMPLARY AND RECOGNIZED UNDER NEW STATE SYSTEM ONLY THREE LISTED AS ACADEMICALLY UNACCEPTABLE30 Sep 2004 Groppel Says State Accountability System Shows Improvements In District, Much Left To Be Done DALLAS—Dallas Independent School District Interim Superintendent Larry Groppel on Thursday said 71 district schools have been rated as exemplary and recognized under the state’s new accountability system and only three schools have been rated as academically unacceptable. DISD, which has 219 schools, had 16 rated as exemplary, 55 as recognized, 136 academically acceptable, and three academically unacceptable. Three alternative schools were not rated, along with six others because of their classifications. "This is positive news for the district because it shows that under the state’s new accountability system and through TAKS, we are making improvements in DISD," Groppel said. "There were 14 schools rated as low performing under the TAAS 2002 system. That number has been cut significantly. We know we have more work to do, but this is good news for DISD." In 2002 DISD had 27 exemplary schools, 40 recognized, 130 acceptable and 14 low performing. >
